The purpose of this document is to facilitate the joint usage of the process content of the latest revisions of both ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207, by providing unified and consolidated guidance on life cycle management of systems and software. This is to help ensure consistency in system concepts and life cycle concepts, models, stages, processes, process application, key points of view, adaptation and use in various domains as the two International Standards are used in combination. That will in turn help a project team design a life cycle model for managing the progress of their project. Hence, ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207 are the documents that apply the concepts found in this document to specific processes.
\n

          This document provides guidelines for the life cycle management of systems and software, complementing the processes described in ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207. This document: - addresses systems concepts and life cycle concepts, models, stages, processes, process application, key points of view, adaptation and use in various domains and by various disciplines; - establishes a common framework for describing life cycles, including their individual stages, for the management of projects to provide, or acquire either products or services; - defines the concept and terminology of a life cycle; - supports the use of the life cycle processes within an organization or a project. Organizations and projects can use these life cycle concepts when acquiring and supplying either products or services; - provides guidance on adapting a life cycle model and the content associated with a life cycle or a part of a life cycle; - describes the relationship between life cycles and their use in applying the processes in ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 (systems aspects) and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207 (software aspects); - shows the relationships of life cycle concepts to the hardware, human, services, process, procedure, facility and naturally occurring entity aspects of projects; and - describes how its concepts relate to detailed process standards, for example, in the areas of measurement, project management and risk management.

          Revision Standard - Superseded.
\n
\n

This document:--addresses systems concepts and life cycle concepts, models, stages, processes, process application, key points of view, adaptation and use in various domains and by various disciplines;--establishes a common framework for describing life cycles, including their individual stages, for the management of projects that provide or acquire either products or services;--defines the concept of a life cycle;--supports the use of the life cycle processes within an organization or a project; organizations and projects can use these life cycle concepts when acquiring and supplying either products or services;--provides guidance on adapting a life cycle model and the content associated with a life cycle or a part of a life cycle;--describes the relationship between life cycles and their use in applying the processes in ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 (systems aspects) and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207 (software systems aspects);--shows the relationships of life cycle concepts to the hardware, human, services, process, procedure, facility and naturally occurring entity aspects of projects;--describes how its concepts relate to detailed process standards, for example, in the areas of measurement, project management, risk management and model-based systems and software engineering.
\n

          Revision Standard - Superseded.
\n
\n
          \t\t\t\t

          New IEEE Standard - Superseded.
\n
          This guide adopts ISO/IEC TR 24748-1:2010, which provides information on life cycle concepts and descriptions of the purposes and outcomes of representative life cycle stages. It also illustrates the use of a life cycle model for systems in the context of ISO/IEC 15288 and provides a corresponding illustration of the use of a life cycle model for software in the context of ISO/IEC 12207. ISO/IEC TR 24748-1:2010 additionally provides detailed discussion and advice on adapting a life cycle model for use in a specific project and organizational environment. It further provides guidance on life cycle model use by domains, disciplines and specialties.
\n
          ISO/IEC TR 24748-1:2010 gives a detailed comparison between prior and current versions of ISO/IEC 12207 and ISO/IEC 15288, as well as advice on transitioning from prior to current versions and on using their application guides. The discussion and advice are intended to provide a reference model for life cycle models, facilitate use of the updated ISO/IEC 15288 and ISO/IEC 12207, and provide a framework for the development of updated application guides for those International Standards. ISO/IEC TR 24748-1:2010 is a result of the alignment stage of the harmonization of ISO/IEC 12207 and ISO/IEC 15288.
\n
          \t\t\t\t
\n
          This Technical Report is a guide for the life cycle management of systems and software based on ISO/IEC 15288 and ISO/IEC 12207. This Technical Report:
\n
          - addresses systems concepts and life cycle concepts, models, stages, processes, process application, key points of view, adaptation and use in various domains;
\n
          - establishes a common framework for describing life cycles, including their individual stages, for the management of projects to provide or acquire either products or services; defines the concept and terminology of a life cycle;
\n
          - supports the use of the life cycle processes within an organization or a project. Organizations and projects can use these life cycle concepts when acquiring and supplying either products or services;
\n
          - provides guidance on adapting a life cycle model and the content associated with a life cycle or a part of a life cycle;
\n
          - describes the relationship between life cycles and their use in ISO/IEC 15288 (systems aspects) and ISO/IEC 12207 (software aspects);
\n
          - shows the relationships of life cycle concepts to the hardware, human, services, process, procedure, facility and naturally occurring entity aspects of projects;
\n
          - describes how its concepts relate to detailed process standards, for example, in the areas of measurement, project management and risk management;
\n
          - complements domain-specific application guidance in ISO/IEC TR 19760 and ISO/IEC TR 15271.
\n
          NOTE When published, ISO/IEC TR 24748-2 and ISO/IEC 24748-3 will cancel and replace ISO/IEC TR 19760 and ISO/IEC TR 15271, respectively.

          Revision Standard - Active.
\n
\n
          \t\t\t\t
\n
          This International Standard establishes a common framework for software life cycle processes, with well defined terminology, that can be referenced by the software industry. It contains processes, activities, and tasks that are to be applied during the acquisition of a software system, product or service and during the supply, development, operation, maintenance and disposal of software products. This is accomplished through the involvement of stakeholders, with the ultimate goal of achieving customer satisfaction.
\n
          This International Standard applies to the acquisition of software systems, products and services, to the supply, development, operation, maintenance, and disposal of software products and the software portion of any system, whether performed internally or externally to an organization. Software includes the software portion of firmware. Those aspects of system definition needed to provide the context for software products and services are included.
\n
          This International Standard also provides processes that can be employed for defining, controlling, and improving software life cycle processes within an organization or a project.
\n
          The processes, activities and tasks of this International Standard may also be applied during the acquisition of a system that contains software, either alone or in conjunction with ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, Systems and software engineering—System life cycle processes.
\n
          In the context of this International Standard and ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, it is recognized that there is a continuum of human-made systems from those that use little or no software to those in which software is the primary interest. It is rare to encounter a complex system without software, and all software systems require physical system components (hardware) to operate, either as part of the software system of interest or as an enabling system or infrastructure. Thus, the choice of whether to apply this International Standard for the software life cycle processes, or ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2015, Systems and software engineering-System life cycle processes, depends on the system of interest. Processes in both standards have the same process purpose and process outcomes, but differ in activities and tasks to perform software engineering or systems engineering, respectively.
\n
          The purpose of this International Standard is to provide a defined set of processes to facilitate communication among acquirers, suppliers and other stakeholders in the life cycle of a software system.
\n
          This International Standard is written for acquirers of software systems, products and services and for suppliers, developers, integrators, operators, maintainers, managers, quality assurance managers, and users of software systems and products. It can be used by a single organization in a self-imposed mode or in a multi-party situation. Parties can be from the same organization or from different organizations and the situation can range from an informal agreement to a formal contract.
\n
          The processes in this International Standard can be used as a basis for establishing business environments, e.g., methods, procedures, techniques, tools and trained personnel. Annex A provides normative direction regarding the tailoring of these software life cycle processes.

\n

          Revision Standard - Superseded.
\n
          This International Standard establishes a common process framework for describing the life cycle of man-made systems. It defines a set of processes and associated terminology for the full life cycle, including conception, development, production, utilization, support and retirement. This standard also supports the definition, control, assessment, and improvement of these processes. These processes can be applied concurrently, iteratively, and recursively to a system and its elements throughout the life cycle of a system.
\n
          \t\t\t\t
\n
          This International Standard establishes a common framework of process descriptions for describing the life cycle of systems created by humans. It defines a set of processes and associated terminology from an engineering viewpoint. These processes can be applied at any level in the hierarchy of a system’s structure. Selected sets of these processes can be applied throughout the life cycle for managing and performing the stages of a system's life cycle. This is accomplished through the involvement of all stakeholders, with the ultimate goal of achieving customer satisfaction. This International Standard also provides processes that support the definition, control and improvement of the system life cycle processes used within an organization or a project. Organizations and projects can use these processes when acquiring and supplying systems. This International Standard concerns those systems that are man-made and may be configured with one or more of the following system elements: hardware, software, data, humans, processes (e.g., processes for providing service to users), procedures (e.g., operator instructions), facilities, materials and naturally occurring entities. Annex A provides normative direction regarding the tailoring of these system life cycle processes.

When a system element is software, the software life cycle processes in ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207:2015 may be used to implement that system element. The two standards are harmonized for concurrent use on a single project or in a single organization.
\n
          The purpose of this International Standard is to provide a defined set of processes to facilitate communication among acquirers, suppliers and other stakeholders in the life cycle of a system. This International Standard applies to organizations in their roles as both acquirers and suppliers. It can be used by a single organization in a self-imposed mode or in a multi-party situation. Parties can be from the same organization or from different organizations and the situation can range from an informal agreement to a formal contract. The processes in this International Standard can be used as a basis for establishing business environments, e.g., methods, procedures, techniques, tools and trained personnel. Annex A provides normative direction regarding the tailoring of these system life cycle processes.
