This guide outlines the design of protection systems for Dynamic Reactive Power Compensators (DRPC). DRPCs play an important role in enhancing reliability and stability of transmission systems. The control and protection systems in a dynamic reactive power compensators system (static var compensator (SVC), static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and Hybrid STATCOM) are custom designed according to the topology used for a specific application. Protection systems are intended to make use of the maximum operational limits of the equipment. Modern protection systems are fully integrated with the development of communication protocols and multifunctional Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED). The guide includes a brief overview of conventional protection schemes. Its main focus is on special protection schemes required for application and protection functions integrated in the control system or IEDs. Special protection schemes include protecting substation buses, power transformers, and associated branches such as Voltage Sourced Converters (VSC), Thyristor Switched Capacitors (TSC), Thyristor Switched Reactor (TSR), Thyristor Controlled Reactors (TCR), harmonic filter banks, grounding transformers, and auxiliary transformers connected to the Medium Voltage (MV) bus. The guide also discusses protection functions integrated in the control systems to protect a DRPC and its main components such as power electronic valves and associated cooling systems. Finally, the guide discusses the interaction of protective functions with the power system when exposed to transients during system disturbances, severe harmonics, and direct current.
\n
The purpose of this guide is to describe:
\n
              * differences in protection from conventional substation equipment
\n
              * current practices in protection for SVC, STATCOM and Hybrid STATCOM systems
\n

New IEEE Standard - Active - Draft.
\n
This guide outlines the design of protection systems for Dynamic Reactive Power Compensators (DRPC). The guide covers protection schemes and philosophies, instrument transformers, relay protection, control system protection, and testing related to the DRPC application. Differences between conventional substation and DRPC protection is discussed, including protection schemes and functions. Recommendations are provided for substation buses, power transformers, and associated branches such as Voltage Sourced Converters (VSC), Thyristor Switched Capacitors (TSC), Thyristor Switched Reactor (TSR), Thyristor Controlled Reactors (TCR), harmonic filter banks, grounding transformers, and auxiliary transformers, as well as power electronic valves and associated cooling systems. Finally, the guide discusses considerations for testing of DRPC control and protection systems.
\n

\n
              * recommended protective functions to increase reliability, security and dependability
\n
              * testing of SVC, STATCOM and Hybrid STATCOM protection systems
