In undertaking the preparation of rules for standards for rotating electrical
\n

In the first place, the scope of the rules has been changed to include all rotating electrical machinery forming a part of the power equip\u{AD}ment of electrically-propelled railway cars and locomo\u{AD}tives (including trolley, gasoline-electric and oil-electric coaches). In the second place, it has been found desirable to add new rules covering principally, rating, commuta\u{AD}tion, and over speed tests. In the third place, the old rules must be brought up-to-date as modern methods of ventilating electrical machinery have changed the situa\u{AD}tion in many respects. It is therefore felt necessary that some explanatory notes should be added to the rules in order to give the users of the rules a clearer understand\u{AD}ing of the reasons for them.
\n

The rules in this division of American Standards cover definitions, classification, rating and methods of test for rotating electrical machinery forining a part of the power equipment of electrically- propelled railway cars and locomotives (including trolley, gasoline-electric and oil-electric coaches). Machines are classified under the following headings : 11-1 Railway Motors.--Motors used for propelling railway cars or locomotives. They may be (a) direct-current motors which are usually series wound but may be either compound or separatelyexcited motors; (b) alternating-current motors which are usually either single-phase commutator type with series characteristics or induction motors. 11-2 Auxiliary Motors.--Motors used to drive air compressors, blowers, small generators, or other auxiliaries forming a part of the power equipment. 11-3 Generators.--For furnishing power to railway motors on the same car or train. They may be driven (a) by internal combustion engines, either oil or gasoline, or (b) by electric motors receiving power from a contact line. Such generators are ustially direct-current machines. 11-4 Auxiliary Generators and Dynamotors.-- Usually used to furnish current for exciting other generators or motors, for blower and compressor motors, or for lights and battery charging. 11-5 Motors.--For driving generators furnishing power to railway motors on a motor-generator type car or locomotive. They are usually single-phase synchronous or induction motors. 11-6 Phase Converters.--Used on some single-phase locomotives to furnish current for poly-phase traction motors.

In undertaking the preparation of rules for standards for rotating electrical
\n
equipment for railway cars and locomotives under the Rules of Procedure of the Ameri\u{AD}can Standards Association, it has been necessary to cover a much wider field than was included in the AIEE Standards for Railway Motors which were published in 1925, approved as American Standards in 1928 and form the basis of this standard.
\n
          \t\t\t\t

           - Superseded.
\n
The rules in this division of American Stand\u{AD}ards cover definitions, classification, rating and
\n
and methods of test for rotating electrical machin\u{AD}ery forming a part of the power
\n
equipment of electrically propelled railway cars and locomo\u{AD}tives.
\n
          \t\t\t\t
\n
In undertaking the preparation of rules for standards for rotating electrical equipment for railway cars and locomotives under the Rules of Procedure of the American Standards Association, it has been necessary to cover a much wider field than was included in the A.I.E.E. STANDARDS for Railway Motors which were published in 1925, approved as American Standards in 1928 and form the basis of this standard. In the first place, the scope of the rules has been enlarged to include all rotating electrical machinery forming a part of the power equipment of electrically propelled railway cars and locomotives. In the second place, it has been found desirable to add new rules covering principally, rating, commutation, and overspeed tests. In the third place, the old rules must be brought up-to-date as modern methods of ventilating electrical machinery have changed the situation in many respects. It is therefore felt necessary that some explanatory notes should be added to the rules in order to give the users of the rules a clearer understanding of the reasons for them.

          Revision Standard - Superseded.
\n
In undertaking the preparation of rules for standards for rotating electrical
\n
equipment for railway cars and locomotives under the Rules of Procedure of the Ameri\u{AD}can Standards Association, it has been necessary to cover a much wider field than was included in the AIEE Standards for Railway Motors which were published in 1925, approved as American Standards in 1928 and form the basis of this standard.
\n
          \t\t\t\t

\n
          \t\t\t\t
